Cedar Grove is a township that is located along the northern edge of Essex County, New Jersey. Essex County is in the northern portion of the state and is situated not far from New York City. The population of Cedar Grove is 12,411, as calculated by the 2010 United States Census. This small community has been ranked as one of the best places to live in New Jersey by New Jersey Monthly and encompasses an area of just under 4 ½ square miles. The community is divided into three sections: North End, South End and Central Cedar Grove.
The name for the borough came from the numerous cedar trees that at one time covered the valley and surrounding hills. In the beginning, Cedar Grove was a farming town, but today it’s a popular suburb in Essex County where people go to get away from the busy cities of New York City and Newark. One of the well-known landmarks of this borough is Frank Dailey’s Meadowbrook Ballroom, which hosted famous bands like Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey. Frank Sinatra also performed here. While it is no longer a place for music, the building still stands. This community was also homme to the first dinner theatre with the Meadowbrook Dinner Theatre from 1959 to 1973 with numerous productions being held there during that period.
The township is surrounded by other small boroughs, including North Caldwell to the west, Little Falls to the northeast, Verona to the south and Montclair to the southeast. Other nearby towns include Upper Montclair, Caldwell, Singac and Brookdale. Clifton is just four miles to the east with a population of over 78,000. Newark is almost nine miles to the southeast with Manhattan another six miles further.
Approximately 13% of the residents are foreign-born with the majority coming from Asia and Europe. Of those who were born in the U.S. they come from a variety of ancestries, including Italian, Irish, German, Polish, English and Arab. Just over half of adult residents are married with another 8.5% either separated or divorced.
