New Jersey
New Jersey is the fourth smallest state in size but the 11th largest in population. It is the most densely populated of all the states with 8,938,175, according to the estimation of the United States Census Bureau in 2014. It has a long and rich history and was one of the major areas for the Industrial Revolution. The state has five distinct regions, including the Gateway Region, Skylands, Shore, Delaware Valley and Pine Barrens. It is also often divided into three areas: North Jersey, Central Jersey and South Jersey.
Many people who live in New Jersey commute to work in New York City or Philadelphia. However, the longest boardwalk in the world is located in Atlantic City, which is also home to many casinos and hotels along with other industries to provide careers for many residents of The Garden State.
The entire state is urban with every county attaining that label. While New Jersey is often overshadowed by other surrounding states, it still plays an important role in American history. Grover Cleveland, one of the US Presidents, was born in New Jersey. This state is also the home of the first official baseball and basketball games.
Approximately one-fifth of the population is foreign born. Those who are native to the U.S. have diverse backgrounds as well with ancestries from Italy, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Latin America and other places. The divorce rate for New Jersey is 9%, according to the United States Census Bureau.
