Newark
Newark is located in Essex County, New Jersey and is the county seat. It is also the largest city in the state with a population of 277,140 according to the 2010 United States Census. It is also number 67 for the country's most populated municipalities. This is due in part to the fact that it is a major hub for shipping, railways and airlines. Newark covers just over 26 square miles with almost two of those square miles being water. The city is divided into five wards with numerous individual neighborhoods.
Several small cities surround Newark with East Newark, Harrison and Kearney to the northeast, East Orange and Orange to the northwest, Irvington and Hillside to the southwest and Silver Lake to the north. Manhattan lies to the east just 11 miles away. Over one-fourth of residents are foreign born with many of them coming from Latin America. A diverse culture exists in Newark with ancestries that include Portuguese, West Indian, Subsaharan African, Italian and Irish. Only about one-third of the adult population is married with another 13% either divorced or separated and half never married.
