North Arlington
North Arlington is a modest borough located in the southern tip of Bergen County, New Jersey. Though not founded until 1840, it is notable for being the site of the first working steam engine in North America, which was employed to pump water from the local copper mine. Its approximate 2.6 square miles are home to 15,392 residents, and maintains slight but steady growth since the 1990 census. North Arlington is surrounded by several other boroughs, including Lyndhurst, Bellville, Kearney, Nutley, Silver Lake, Rutherford, Bloomfield and East Newark. Its distance of only 5 miles from Newark and 13 miles from New York City make it attractive to commuters. Slightly over 28% of the borough's residents were born in other countries, with most hailing from Europe, Asia and Latin America. The predominant ancestry of native born residents includes Italian, Irish, Polish, German, Arab and English nationalities. Just fewer than 45% of residents have earned a four-year or higher college degree, and around 55% are married. Approximately 6.1% of North Arlington residents have been divorced.
