Paterson
Paterson, New Jersey has the distinction of being the county seat of Passaic County, a county in the northern part of the state. It also happens to be the most populous city in Essex County, claiming a population of 146,199, as indicated by the 2010 United States Census. It ranks third for population in the entire state. It also holds several other distinctions, including being the second most dense population in all of the United States behind New York City. It ranks second for Muslim population, too.
Paterson was the birthplace of Lou Costello, half of the popular comedy team Abbott and Costello. The two would perform at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson before boxing matches. The stadium itself is a historic building and listed in the National Register of Historic Places as one of three stadiums for the Negro League still in existence.
In the early years for the community, Paterson was an important part of the economic growth of the area with manufacturing playing a key role. Since then, unemployment has been rather high as urban areas have suffered a decline in industry. Today, the community is home to more than 50 ethnic groups with many of those continuing to grow and thrive in the area.
Almost one-third of the population is foreign born with the majority of people hailing from Latin America with Asia coming in second. For those who are native to the country, their ancestries include Italian, West Indian and Arab. Just under 40% of the adult population of Paterson are married with another 10% either being separated or divorced.
Manhattan is only 14 miles from Paterson with Newark 12 miles away. Small boroughs surrounding the city include Prospect Park and Haledon to the northwest and Fair Lawn to the northeast. Hawthorne is to the north while the neighbor to the south is Clifton. Elmwood Park, West Paterson and Totowa are also nearby.
