Washington Township
Washington Township is a unique township located in Morris County, New Jersey. What makes it unique is that it is one of several other municipalities to include the word “Washington” as part of the name. In fact, another Washington Township exists just 10 miles away. The township located in Morris County has a population of 18,533, according to the 2010 United States Census. This was an increase from the previous two censuses and shows a growth in the community.
The township encompasses almost 45 square miles and includes numerous unincorporated communities within its borders. Bordering Washington Township is I-80 to the north, I-78 to the south and I-287 to the east. Several small communities also surround the township, including Mount Olive and Hopatcong to the northeast, Readington and Montgomery to the south and Easton to the west. Approximately 6% of the residents are foreign born with the majority hailing from Canada or Europe. Many ancestries are also represented here, including Irish, Polish, Italian, German, English and Scottish.
Like much of the area throughout New Jersey, Washington Township has a long history. It began to see major growth after the completion of the Garden State Parkway in the mid-1950s. This main highway went right through the middle of the town, and two exits were created. The borough has many modern homes, but it has also retained its sense of history by preserving places like Seven Chimneys. This house has seven chimneys as indicated in its name and is the oldest home in the town. It has gained recognition by being included on both the state and national register of historic places. Bus and train service provide easy access for commuters to other areas of Bergen County and beyond. The community has its own shopping center with a movie theater and retail businesses. It also has a TV station for local events and programming, and it is run by volunteers.
