West Milford

West Milford is a municipality with more than 80 square miles located in Passaic County, NY. It is situated in the “Heart of the Highlands” with beautiful mountains as part of the surrounding terrain. Almost forty peaceful lakes and narrow roads run along the natural scenery. According to history, West Milford first petitioned for the name New Milford at the same time as another town. The other application was approved first, so this borough became known as it is today as West Milford. One of the largest natural attractions in the area is Greenwood Lake, which covers over 1900 acres and is situated in both West Milford and Greenwood Lake in New York. Cecile B. DeMille had his summer home located here. A local bus service along with NJ Transit provide public transportation in and around West Milford. An interesting fact about this borough is that a TV comedy, Simpler Times, was filmed here.

Many of the 10,000 homes are situated on its numerous lakes. These homes which were once summer bungalows, have been added onto creating year round residence. Construction has continued to develop new housing and neighborhoods and there is certain to be a home just right for any chooser. A major state highway, Route 23, winding parallel to the Pequannock River, is the main transportation to other areas. West Milford is well-known for its dedication to youth activities, yet all ages can enjoy programs which are available. Recreational activities, such as boating, hiking and mountain biking, attract some hardy tourists, but the main attraction for the locals is its vast expanse of largely undeveloped forests which are protected by the state and encompass almost two-thirds of the entire municipality. One of the most interesting sites in the town is Jungle Habitat, which was once a wildlife habitat formed by Warner Brothers. Issues with the habitat caused it to be closed down in 1976, but it has since been used for various township events and activities.
